“There’s a decal from the Fontainebleau in Miami Beach. It looks pretty old. And part of a label from the Union Pacific Railroad, but sorry, that’s all. No address—or name. Not even initials.”

“It was worth a try.” Faith was terribly disappointed. She’d envisioned Tess’s real name and address in block letters. Dunne said people always mess up, leave a trail, overlook something.Tess hadn’t.

She recalled what Dunne had said about trying to connect Tess with the Ganley.

“You’re sure you’re all right? Is there a friend you can call to spend time with tonight?” Faith wanted to ease into the subject; besides, she was worried about Sarah being on her own.

“I’m going to call my friend. The one who gave me the party.” A boyfriend. Good.

“I know we asked you this before, but if you can think of anything that might tie Tess to the Ganley, please give me a call and I’ll let Detective Dunne know.” They were partners again. Today had made that clear.

“I will, but other than her modeling for some classes out there, I can’t think of anything.”

“Tess modeled for classes at the museum?”

“Yes, there and other schools around here. I guess I should have mentioned this before,” she said in a very small voice.

Dunne wasn’t in his office. Faith left a message for him to call and tried his cell, leaving a message there, too. She had better luck with Charley, who told her he’d get on it immediately.

“And not a peep from any of them,” he said in a disgusted tone, adding,“Keep this to yourself now, Faith. You can get me a list of the teachers and what they teach. That’s all.” Charley had a fax at home. When she’d discovered that, Faith had felt for the first time that it really was a new millennium. She took the list of the staff and school faculty with their extensions that 136

had come from Kelly Burton in a packet of information about the museum, added what each teacher taught, using the current course catalog as a guide, and faxed it to the chief. Roland Phillips and Glen Elroy were most likely to have used Tess as a model—Roland for his life drawing classes and Glen for the figurative clay sculpture ones.

The kitchen door opened and her family rushed in, cheeks glow-ing from the day’s exercise and eyes sparkling from being with their adored and adoring grandparents.

“Look what Grandpa gave me!” Amy squealed. “It’s a real spyglass. Like they used to use in olden times on sailing ships.” She held out the brass hand telescope for Faith to examine.

“And he gave me this chess set. It belonged to his dad, my great-

grandfather.” Ben’s voice was filled with awe as he set the inlaid wooden box on the table and opened it to form the board, sliding back a panel to reveal the intricately carved set.
